Our Story
Hi there,
Lochana here, owner and founder of The Yoga Pillow. Having been public for a couple months now I thought I’d hop on here and share a bit about myself as well as what inspired me to invent a new kind of yoga prop that does not exist anywhere else. You see, growing up Buddhist I was exposed to many many minutes and hours of meditation from a very young age and it wasn’t until I started doing yoga 10 years later in my early 20s that I finally realized the benefits of not only yoga but meditation as well. I will never forget the day when it all clicked, a proverbial light bulb literally went off in my head. After having a yoga practice of a couple years I attended a meditation retreat and in between sessions found myself idly following a pink butterfly around the retreat center for another 30-45 minutes. It was incredible! The kind of connection I felt to this other seemingly minute being. How can I, a big scary human feel so close to this delicate butterfly? Cut to several years later, more yoga and a few more meditation retreats under my belt I decided to get certified to teach yoga. It was not until then when I realized that we don’t do much meditation in a typical yoga class but in my certification training we were getting exposed to all sorts of different styles of meditation. And as we sat to meditate the instructors would que for us to site on a yoga block or to grab a yoga bolster. I started off initially sitting on the blocks since I had not tried that before but after sometime (being someone that had meditated regularly on various floor cushions) sitting for upwards of 20 to 30 mins or more began to feel very uncomfortable and started to hurt my thighs and hips sitting along the block. I decided to shift my seating of choice to a yoga bolster instead and upon doing that I noticed another fellow student put a bolster on a yoga block and there my mind was blown. Did I just come up with a new kind of yoga prop? NO WAY! No way that doesn’t already exist! And promptly pushed it aside. Upon going home that evening I did extensive google searching and then when nothing like what was in my mind showed up and decided to go ahead and make the first prototype.
